The FAO Schwartz pop-up stores for the holidays are here, at Toys R Us and Babies R Us. I was in Babies R Us over the weekend and they had a FAO specific selection which was very sweet. You can definitely see the different area within the store, it’s very distinct. Not only are the FAO Schwartz pop-ups here, but Toys R Us is also opening 600 pop-up stores to increase the selection of its exclusive toys and their own “R” label items.
Toys R Us actually bought the assets of FAO after their bankruptcy. This isn’t the first time Toys R Us has done something like this. In the past they have grabbed competitors such as eToys.com and KBToys to try and stay ahead of places like Target and Walmart. Most of the FAO pop-ups will be at high-end malls or areas. You’ll get to see the piano featured in “Big” that Tom Hanks jumped on, Madame Alexander dolls, Harry Potter everything and more. Come January 2011 these stores are estimated to close, but you never know what will happen if they are successful. I’m sure Toys R Us will keep them around a little longer if sales sky rocket.
